Butomus umbellatus 'Rosenrot' is a variety of the British native flowering rush, Butomus umbellatus, which has been selected for a stronger colour. Like the wild form, it has very slender leaves and produces tall umbels of flowers in summer, but it has stems that are redder in spring and blooms that are a darker pink. (See the third picture for a comparison of a 'Rosenrot' flower next to the standard wild Butomus flower).
It makes a pleasing contrast to the White Form of this plant if grown together; these two forms taking their names from the brothers Grimm fairy tale "Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot", or "Snow White and Rose Red", about two sisters with different colouring.
Butomus plants like plenty of room for their roots to spread as they grow, so we would suggest starting your plant off in a pot of at least 2 litres capacity, and larger is better. If you opt for a 2 litre pot, pot the plant on again after a year.
If designing a planting scheme, we recommend approximately 2 Butomus umbellatus 'Rosenrot' plants per square foot of ground, or 1 plant per linear foot of pond edge. Read more here on how to pot and care for your plant.
